Aaaaand the beloved summer is almost over ... I'm just counting down the days back to the everyday routine. So let's get ready for it with a big smile on our faces. I am going to write about my job, of course. Dear young dancers, go and have a look at the last shool year's dance outfit and see what's still good, what's too small now and what you need to get. Take a pen and paper and let's start ...
What dancewear is a must:
Let's classify it based on the most usual requirements of individual dance styles in our territory :-)
Elementary art school – dance department (obviously), here we have classical, modern and folk dances.
Younger kids, lower grades of of art schools should definitely wear ballet shoes (canvas of leather ones). Socks are also a solution but it can get slippery on marley floors. Ballet shoes are, in my opinion, a must. The sole shouldn't be made of rubber. It's suitable for gymnastics but not dancing. The price quality ration shows that split sole shoes are the most favourite. So canvas split sole ballet shoes are the ones. There's usually elastic binding and arch elastic as well to make the shoes fit and hold feet in place.
I am going to continue with the lower grades not to mess things up. Another thing you definitely need is a ballet leotard. Why a leotard and not a t-shirt? Simply because your dance teacher can clearly see the posture of your kid. And that's one of the reasons your kid took up dancing, init? This way the teacher can correct protruding shoulder blades and a belly. That's just not it in the t-shirt. I suggest leotards, depending on the season, with short or long sleeves. The material is up to you. Cotton or tactel. There are also some less expensive options but the skin of your kid will have to deal with it too... If your dance hall is a bit cooler, I can also offer you ballet sweaters and jumpers to warm your kid up at the beginning of the lesson.
As for the lower part of the outfit - we recommend ballet tights. They're thicker than regular ones and are designed for dancing. They come in various colours, footless or footed, there are many options. All you have to do is choose some. Or regular leggings. But tight ones, please.
And then we come what is really "necessary" for young girls - skirts. Yes, I admit that some teachers don't like them because the young dancers then admire themselves in the mirror and forget to listen to their teacher :) But without a skirt it just doesn't cut it. There are wrap skirt available but, if I may, the pull-on ones are much better.
Or instead of a skirt the kids can also wear shorts over the ballet tights.
And don't forget about hair accessories. There's nothing more tedious than getting hair out of the face. That's why ponytails and buns are perfect. With hair in a bun, the teacher can clearly see the spine up to the neck area. And it's much better this way.
And let's go on with the higher grades. We can notice more individual approach here so let's get to the point:
Ballet shoes are again a must - socks are ok but not in a dance school, once you improve your techniques you can also wear knee socks.
For folk dances, we recommend dance sneakers or character shoes which are here, in Slovakia, most frequently used and of course we can recommend the best model for you.
Ballet leotard - one is never enough, your mum might not be able to wash them as often as you would need it.
Ballet tights - go for the convertible ones with a small hole on the bottom through which you can pull them up and wear them as leggings.
Classical dance - a skirt or shorts or just a leotard.
Folk dances - I recommend a skirt with a round shape that will make the movement in a skirt more natural and you won't be shocked during a performance what piece of clothing you're wearing..
Hair accessories, warm up pants, leg warmers, it's up to you.
You can also find some other accessories and things you need so don't be shy and come or contact us. We are more than happy to see our dance family grow. Thank you.
